03-10-2019 | Dutch Wavemaker Moon Weijens has left the Netherlands on the 2nd of October together with a diverse group of 36 young European Changemakers. They are sailing to the United Nations Climate Conference in Santiago, Chile. Moon is one of the four people who started the Sail to the COP project. Their main reason for going is that they are very worried about the emissions of aviation - that is why they will not travel by plane to the COP but by Sailing Vessel Regina Maris. COP25 will take place from 2 to 13 December.
At the UN Climate Conference COP25 and throughout the sailing trip, the participants want to raise their concerns about the negative impact of air travel on our planet. The sail trip is part of a yearlong (media) campaign for policy change at national and international level. The aim is to make the transport playing field more equal. The participants want to make it easier, more affordable and more attractive to choose sustainable travel options like going by train, bus and bike.
Changing the transport system is a complex transition that involves different stakeholders such as train companies, NGOs, governments and policymakers. This is why the participants want to use the time on board to do a think tank.
The participants will sail to the COP25 to call for:
- Fair taxation of aviation
- Promotion of sustainable ways of traveling
- Building an international network
Life on board – Think Tank
During the trip the participants will organize a think tank on board. For 4 hours per day participants will work together on analyses and solutions for the future of travel. All participants will bring different skills and expertises. The trip will be a personal transformative experience of a lifetime - spending time on sea in such an intense way is a chance for deep connections. The output of the trip will be a vision with clear demands towards our political leaders and the industry. This will be in the form of a document and presentation which they will publish online and send to all of the supporters. Once in Chile the participants will edit the document and present it at the COP.
During the COP
The participants will organize actions in and outside the conference. Inside the conference they want to organize/join a side event in which they share their vision and start a dialogue with the political leaders. With creative actions they are aiming to draw attention to the topic of aviation.
